Computer-Based CAE
- It is a computer version that is administered in a certified testing center. It has a better testing experience which includes on screen timers, listening section headphones and quicker processing of results. Candidates write their answers in the computer, whereas the Speaking test is being done in person at the presence of an examiner.
Structure
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) exam is divided into four parts that evaluate the various skills in the English language. They are Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The Reading and Use of English part takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is used to measure grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Writing part will also last 1 hour 30 minutes and involve a candidate to compose two texts, either essay, report, or review. The Listening part takes approximately 40 minutes and evaluates the skills of listening to spoken English based on audio tape. The Speaking part lasts approximately 15 minutes and is held in face-to-face form, normally in the presence of another candidate, with an examiner.
Paper-Based CAE
- The traditional form is the paper-based format where the candidates respond to the questions with the help of printed questionnaires and respond to them by writing. It is done in a set of predetermined dates in official exam centers. The Speaking test is also taken personally before an examiner. The two formats have the same structure and are assessed by Cambridge Assessment English and findings are reported based on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference to Languages (CEFR).
Scoring
- The CAE scoring system is based on the Common European Framework of Reference of languages (CEFR). Scores range from 160 to 210. A score of 180 or above means the pass at C1 level whereas 200 or above means Grade A performance, which is the C2 level. Applicants with a score of 160 -179 are issued with B2 certificate. The average of the scores in all four parts of the exam is used to obtain the final result.
